2023 Trends: Exterior Limewashing What Is It and How to Apply It
Fancy giving your home’s exterior an upgrade? The trend that we’re forecasting for 2023 is exterior limewash. It’s aesthetically pleasing, easy to apply, and low maintenance, offering the perfect way to boost your curb appeal.
So what exactly is exterior limewash? Limewash is made with crushed limestone that is then burned and mixed with water to form a putty-like paste. It absorbs into porous surfaces like brick, stucco, and stone, allowing the original material to still wick moisture and avoid issues with damp. It has a chalky finish, and it’s most commonly white or gray but it can also be mixed with pigments for a more colorful finish.
What’s so great about exterior limewash? For one thing, it’s a quick and easy way to add some serious curb appeal to your home. It’s also versatile! Despite being a technique that goes back as far as the ancient Romans, limewash creates a chalky textural finish that suits both classic and modern buildings.
Exterior limewash is also environmentally-friendly, using natural materials and avoiding toxins and solvents. It also has a high pH that naturally resists pests and unwanted growths.
Even better, exterior limewash is totally low maintenance. It does wear down over the course of about 5–7 years, but the great thing is that you can reapply it without having to remove the original layer.
Tempted? Here’s how to apply exterior lime wash:
1) Prepare your surface. Clean the walls you want to paint, removing any loose dirt, debris, mold, weeds, or moss. Use a fungicide to kill mold if it’s present.
2) Dampen the surface. Apply clean water to your walls until they are damp.
3) Apply the first coat. Mix your limewash thoroughly to avoid lumps, then apply a thin layer with a large masonry brush. Allow it to dry for 24 hours. The limewash will look clear on application, but will be opaque when dry!
4) Build up in thin layers. Continue to apply thin layers until you get the finish you’re looking for, making sure you allow sufficient drying time in between each layer. It should take about 4 coats to cover an external wall.
